Our New Creative Art Class
We are delighted to introduce our new Creative Art class for people with dementia and their carers. It is held every Thursday afternoon at The Cut between 1.00 and 3.00, run by art teacher Rachel Copperthwaite and supported by a dedicated team of volunteers.
Art is considered to be an activity that can help manage the symptoms of dementia. Engaging with art in a warm friendly environment, can help people with memory loss stay connected with the world around them. It offers a new avenue of expression and communication, boosts confidence, and helps reduce anxiety.
While for care givers art can act as an informal support group reduce stress and even increase endorphins and dopamine level resulting in a sense of well-being. And for couples living with dementia It is a chance to participate in a shared activity that is fun and stress free.
Every week we do something new and explore new ways of making art. We have worked with collage and even lino cut printing. This week we looked at Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. We talked about the painting and then we tackled some of the techniques that Van Gogh used to create his painting. We all had fun using paint to imitate the whirls and swirls of that starry, starry night.
We still have room for a few more participants. You don’t have to be a good artist, just be willing to explore possibilities. So come and join our happy creative group. In a few weeks we will be working on making Christmas cards and decorations.
